08/09/2016 Commented Thank you Ian, for your contribution - yes, the ultra proponents of 'everything as a service' logic hold this unique view of products being mere 'means' to an end - the 'end' being a 'service..'.? Also, I am still trying to better understand the supposed conceptual difference between utility and value in use in the context of the foundations of PSS?Apparently, utility is viewed in a particular context in G-D logic and takes a new meaning in S-D logic? Hopefully, this will become more clearer as this area/theme gains more prominence...
30/08/2016 Commented My understanding is that provision of ‘Advanced Services’ through a relevant Product Service System - is primarily contingent on the ‘capital value and complexity’ of the asset involved in the process – most examples that I have and continue to come across set this as a premise or foundation for ‘applicability’ and relate to high value & complex assets. (Example – Aircraft Engines, Wind Turbines, Locomotives etc etc). Using this as a reference position then, one can perhaps, begin to see the relevance of ‘Advanced Services’ in the context of a complete ‘house’ (using your example of ‘bricks in use’ and house). This approach significantly simplifies understanding of the concept of servitization in my opinion – in that - basic/low value products attract ‘base’ services…and the nature of the service model adopted changes relative to inherent asset value & complexity. Hence, the ‘bricks in use’ and ‘hole in the wall’ analogies may not require understanding from the point of view of ‘Advanced Services’ after all.In fact most applicable instances of ‘Advanced Services’ involve an element of ‘Risk & Revenue Sharing’ and ‘Co- Creation of Value in use’ on the parts of manufacturer/supplier and customer. The aforementioned preset the necessity for mutual, long term and multi-lateral relationship building as absolute imperatives for the model to work.
